17. The Ring

The shout rose like a struck bell and every man in the Great Hall snapped into motion. The intruder's arrow had been a message and a challenge both; my blood answered with an ancient, cold rhythm. I felt the hall split into axes—those who would cower, those who would hunt—and I chose the hunt.
